Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, making it difficult to enjoy life or function at your best?

Anxiety is a part of everyday life, and in some instances, it can be beneficial. For example, if you are anxious about a job interview, you might stay home to prepare rather than go out with friends. A little anxiety can act as a motivator, but too much can leave you with an increased heart rate, sweating, chest pain, trembling, breathing difficulties, light-headedness, tingling and numbness. High levels of anxiety can also make it difficult to concentrate and sleep, which can lead to relationship difficulties and trouble working like you usually do.

Anxiety symptoms can develop into panic attacks, social anxiety, a phobia and specific fears, obsessions and compulsions, and excessive worry or general anxiety.

The best treatment for anxiety will depend on you and your circumstances, experiences and symptoms. Learning to tame anxiety can be a welcome relief and puts you back in control rather than being controlled by anxiety.

Types of Anxiety

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Chronic worrying, stress, and tension interfere with daily enjoyment of life. Symptoms include anxiety, difficulty with decision-making, insomnia, muscle tension, irritability, and persistent worry about future events, often disproportionate to the situation.
  • Panic Disorder & Panic Attacks: Characterized by sudden episodes of extreme anxiety or even terror. These attacks can occur suddenly and may or may not recur over time. They can involve symptoms like a racing heart, tight chest, difficulty breathing, sweating, shaking, palpitations and lightheadedness.
  • Agoraphobia: Fear of having a panic attack in open spaces or when considering leaving your home. Agoraphobia often develops as a result of a fear of experiencing anxiety symptoms. Symptoms of panic attacks, such as a racing heart, tight chest, difficulty breathing, sweating, shaking, and lightheadedness, can all contribute to agoraphobia.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Obsessions are uncontrollable, repetitive and intrusive thoughts that cause anxiety. Compulsions are repetitive behaviours or mental acts that are performed to alleviate the anxiety caused by obsessions, but they often simply perpetuate the cycle of anxiety. Common obsessions include fear of contamination, harming others or making mistakes, while common compulsions include cleaning, checking and counting.
  • Health Anxiety: Excessive worry about having serious illnesses despite the absence of medical evidence. Individuals with health anxiety often seek reassurance from healthcare professionals or the internet, which may exacerbate their anxiety.
  • Acute Stress Disorder: Develops shortly after exposure to a traumatic event. Symptoms include intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, dissociation and avoidance of reminders of the trauma. Individuals may feel disconnected from reality or experience emotional numbness.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Symptoms may develop weeks, months or even years after experiencing a traumatic event. PTSD symptoms include intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, avoidance of trauma reminders, emotional numbness, hyper-vigilance and sleep disturbances. Please see our information on First Responders and PTSD & Trauma.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder / Social Phobia: Fear of social situations or interactions due to a fear of being judged, embarrassed or humiliated. Symptoms include shyness, blushing, sweating, difficulty speaking in public and avoidance of social situations.
  • Specific Phobia: Intense fear or anxiety triggered by specific objects or situations, such as flying, heights, spiders or enclosed spaces. Symptoms include panic attacks, avoidance behaviour and excessive fear when encountering the phobic stimulus.
